I’m not the son of a son of a sailor. I’m the daughter of the daughter of a sailor.
This past spring I finally decided to take a sailing class — something I’ve wanted to do for a long time as a way to connect with my late grandfather, Hal Bailey.
The course was definitely challenging, but learning how to slice through Boca Ciega Bay with tacks and jibes, rig up the boat, and sail real fast at a beam reach was so satisfying.

St. Pete City Council approved a one-year deal with the Rowdies to keep them at Al Lang Stadium for at least one more year. City leaders may redevelop the historic stadium + surrounding land into a new Center for the Arts. The team’s potential new ownership may move them to Tampa. (Tampa Bay Times)

Put the meal prep away, we’re going out tonight. Temak House is now serving Japanese fusion sushi in Westchase. The menu boasts sushi burger, “Sake Fire,” and grilled octopus, among other delights.(That’s So Tampa)

Let It Be ... open. Gulfport’s old timey scoop shop just reopened its doors nearly a year after Hurricane Helene flooded the waterfront town. The pink and teal spot serves its signature small-batch scoops in traditional flavors and new weekly creations.

Uncle Sam (Read: Hillsborough County) needs you. County Commissioners are looking for residents to serve on the Hillsborough County City-County Planning Commission. What, like it’s hard? All you need to do — besides having opinions — is a submit an application/questionnaire and completed Standards of Conduct Form by Thursday, Sept. 18.

Okay, back to sailing. Beyond Boca Ciega, there’s tons of options for starting your sailing journey. The Davis Island Yacht Club offers adult + kids classes, lessons, and clinics. The St. Pete Sailing Center leads beginner and intermediate classes, adaptive sailing options, plus special clinics.
