How to get around Tampa Bay without using so much gas

Whether you’re looking to save a few bucks on gas, reduce your carbon footprint, or find a new way to get around, there’s plenty of options in TBAY.

The TECO Line Streetcar is directly ahead and is riding away from the camera. There is sunlight coming in from the left and a destination sign on the streetcar reads, "Downtown Tampa."

The TECO Streetcar had ~1.3 million passengers in 2023.

Are you tired of filling up your tank every few days? Then we’ve got some ideas that can help you reduce your gas usage while still getting out of the house and enjoying the best of the Tampa Bay area.

In honor of World Car Free Day on Sunday, Sept. 22, here are a few ways to get around without using gas at all, or at least using less of the stuff.

There are public transit options in both Tampa and St. Pete. The TECO Line Streetcar runs between downtown Tampa and Ybor City. It runs on electricity and is free of charge to ride. Across the Bay, the SunRunner offers a comfy transport option between downtown St. Pete and St. Pete Beach. SunRunner vehicles are hybrid-electric and fares start at just $1.10 per ride.

DASH is also an option in Tampa, with all-electric bright yellow Tesla vehicles offering rideshare services for $2 per person. Like other companies, it works via an app.

If you want your environmentally-friendly travel with a spot of exercise, St. Pete’s partnership with Lime offers public e-bike rentals. The City of Tampa has similar partnerships in place, offering rules and guidance for renting bikes across its service area.

The Tampa Bay area is also blessed with several walkable neighborhoods, not only in the major downtowns. So if you want to take a drive, park up, and get your steps in, here are our recommendations

  • In Hillsborough County, head to Ybor City, Hyde Park Village, Water Street Tampa, the Channel District, or Midtown Tampa. Plus, you can look forward to Gasworx joining the list soon.
  • And in Pinellas County, Gulfport, Dunedin, Safety Harbor, Clearwater Beach, and Historic Old Northeast are all good options. For future planning, the Historic Gas Plant District is set to be walkable too.
