🏓 Move aside, pickleball

Two people playing table tennis. We can't see their faces because the image is too low, and the other has their back turned, but they are stood by a blue table, with the ball in play hovering over the net.

The nation’s collective interest in table tennis exists in a strange time loop: once every four years, as the Summer Olympic Games roll around, interest in the sport spikes.

Now, with the success of “Marty Supreme,” the game is gaining attention again — no Summer Games required. If you want to get ahead of the curve, grab a paddle and head to one of these local spots:
  • The best part of a new hobby? Community. That’s what awaits at the St. Pete Ping Pong Club. Members meet every Wednesday to play at Outcast Brewing Company.
  • Once you’ve made a few friends, bring them to Pickle + Pint in Largo. Open until 10 p.m. most nights of the week, this spot has tables for hire, food + drink options, and an extensive list of beer and wine.
  • The City of Tampa has a couple of free-to-use tables at Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park. Remember to bring your paddles and balls.

News Notes

Number

1,150. That’s how many housing units could be added to downtown Tampa thanks to the planned development of the shuttered Army-Navy Surplus Market. The proposal was made by Miami-based developer Property Markets Group — the group responsible for the second-tallest residential building in the world. (Tampa Tomorrow)

Development

In other development news, let’s head to Dunedin. After years of planning, officials have approved Main Street Exchange, a mixed-use project at 830 Douglas Ave. bringing a boutique hotel, dining options, retail space, a theater, and a rooftop bar to the seaside city. (Tampa Bay Business Journal)

Coming Soon

Just one more. LA Fitness is building a new gym on Fowler Avenue, right by USF. The 30,000-sqft facility is taking shape at RITHM, the mixed-use development taking over the former University Mall space. In the meantime, TBAY’s gyms have options for every type of workout. (Tampa Bay Business Journal)

Sports

Mike Evans is leaving Tampa Bay after 12 seasons with the Buccaneers. His contract recently expired, and now he’s heading west to play for the San Francisco 49ers, who signed the veteran wide receiver to a three-year deal. Thanks for the memories, Mike. (The Athletic)

Post of the Day

A screenshot of an Instagram post by City of Tampa, showing Hells Gibson — an artist — standing in front of her mural. It is a big pink wall with oranges and flowers on it, with the writing "Flowers Grow in Florida" on it.

Have you seen this mural? | Post by City of Tampa

A colorful journey across the country made its way to the Cigar City. Hells Gibson is on a mission to paint a mural in every US state, and for Florida, she chose the wall of Hyatt Place in downtown Tampa.

For more artistic exploration, there are plenty of murals on both sides of the bay.
