We’ve been waiting for this one for quite a while actually.

Construction officially starts next week on the Tampa Riverwalk expansion. So we thought we’d give you a refresher — with some updates — on the $56 million project.

What’s included?

The long-awaited project will add a 5.5 mile stretch through West Tampa, with about 2 miles along the Hillsborough River. Once complete, you’ll be able to walk, bike, and urban jungle hike a 12.2 mile loop with better lighting, cross walks, and other safety upgrades.

Will it look like the OG Riverwalk?

Kinda. The current 2.6 mile stretch exclusively hugs the riverfront, but the extension will also weave its way through West Tampa neighborhoods — connecting pedestrians and bikers to Tampa Heights, Ybor City, Bayshore Boulevard, Hyde Park, North Hyde Park, Riverside Heights, Bowman Heights, and Ridgewood Park.

What’s the timeline?

First up is building a pedestrian bridge underneath the Platt Street bridge, according to WTSP. Early next year, the city will start construction on a new riverwalk path by Ridgewood Park.

Who’s paying for it?

Tampa is funding $32 million of the $56 million transformation, according to That’s So Tampa. A federal BUILD grant is covering $24 million, and the West Tampa Community Redevelopment Agency is contributing $10 million.
