The ultimate analog hobby

Analog hobbies — i.e. tactile and slow-paced activities — are definitely having a moment, and there’sperhaps no more analog hobby than sailing.
There’s no screens, no gas, and no real tech in sight — beyond radios and maybe a compass — and it forces you to be mindful. Last spring, I spent two full weekends out on Boca Ciega Bay learning how to cruise a 16-ft Capri around just using the wind.
I struggled to keep the boat on course in the wind, completely focused on trying to keep track of shifts and lifts and all of the terms. While I did knock down a marker in the process (sorry if the Coast Guard is reading this), but I also completely disconnected from my terrifying inner monologue. It was sensational.
I highly recommend giving it a go — and because we’re surrounded by water on the Gulf Coast, there’s plenty of clubs to get started.
Pinellas County’s Public Works Department just wrapped up its flood vulnerability assessment. Officials evaluated city facilities + areas using multiple potential scenarios and found: 25% of emergency centers, 16 fire stations, three police facilities, and 74 drinking water facilities are exposed. Good news: No local shelters are exposed. (St. Pete Catalyst)

So, what are local leaders doing to alleviate the region’s flooding problems? Well, the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council is using a grant to map out coastline vulnerabilities. Once the results are in, the hope is to use findings as “the justification to bring in big infrastructure projects” like living shorelines. (WUSF News)

Keeping up with TBAY’s influx of new coffeeshops and bakeries is a Sisyphean task. So thanks, St. Pete, for the assist.
The city recently shared a behind-the-scenes look at Somebody’s Coffee, which opened in a tiny purple house last August. The new local biz serves coffee, healthy eats, and as a third space for budding local friendships. Make sure you check out the garden.

One of my dearest friends is visiting this upcoming weekend. I’m planning to bring her to Ichi Koroshi’s anniversary brunch on Saturday, March 28 so maybe she’ll stay forever.
The Seminole Heights spot is celebrating with bacon, egg, and cheese ramen, Chasyu rice bowls, and Karaage minis. She’ll never leave me now.
