Analog hobbies — i.e. tactile and slow-paced activities — are definitely having a moment, and there’s perhaps no more analog hobby than sailing.
There’s no screens, no gas, and no real tech in sight — beyond radios and maybe a compass — and it forces you to be mindful. Last spring, I spent two full weekends out on Boca Ciega Bay learning how to cruise a 16-ft Capri around just using the wind.
I struggled to keep the boat on course in the wind, completely focused on trying to keep track of shifts and lifts and all of the terms. While I did knock down a marker in the process (sorry if the Coast Guard is reading this), but I also completely disconnected from my terrifying inner monologue. It was sensational.
I highly recommend giving it a go — and because we’re surrounded by water on the Gulf Coast, there’s plenty of clubs to get started:
Davis Island Yacht Club | Perched at one of Tampa’s most scenic vistas, the club hosts both adult and youth lessons, plus home school programs. Registration is now open for summer sail camp, so you can start ‘em young.
Boca Ciega Yacht Club | The Gulfport club offers sail school sessions every spring and fall — one starts soon. You’ll learn the vocab and basics in the classroom, then head out with an instructor for two full weekends of guided sailing.
St. Pete Sailing Center | You’ve definitely spotted this bustling sailor’s hub along the downtown waterfront. The longtime sailing center offers beginner and intermediate sailing clinics, racing classes, and special clinics. The center also offers adaptive options with wheelchair-accessible floating docks + lifts to assist sailors.
Tampa Sailing Squadron | The Apollo Beach club offers small classes for kids and teens ages 7 to 17, plus an American Sailing Association course for women on basic keelboat sailing.
Clearwater Community Sailing Center | Book a private lesson, adventure experience for up to five sailors, and even a windsurfing how-to at one of TBAY’s famed beaches. Or sign the teens or littles up for week-long sailing camp stints this summer.
