VCs back startups for outsized returns. Regular people wait. But rule changes fixed that.

Take Revolut. In 2016, 433 people averaged a $2,370 stake. Today? That’s worth $1 million+, up 89,900%. No wonder 10,000+ people and the same VCs behind Uber and Venmo are taking the chance on Pacaso.

News Notes

Number

What’s the latest on the Trop? Late last week, St. Pete City Council members approved an additional $16 million for stadium repairs. That brings the project total to nearly $60 million. Where’s the new money going? The extra dough will go toward roof + turf installation, drywall repairs, and more. (WUSF News)

Development

Big changes could be on the way to Pass-A-Grille. DevMar Development wants to build a 17-unit boutique hotel, Helios. Plus, another owner wants to redevelop a storm-damaged apartment complex into three new buildings called Barracks by the Sea. Both projects are still under review. (Tampa Bay Business Journal)

Try This

No one hates the near-daily afternoon thunderstorms quite like our dogs — or at least my chocolate lab. The Dog Storm Study is looking for 250 pups with thunderphobia to enter a clinical study testing out a new calming medication. Enroll your pet online. (Tampa Bay Times)

Mansion Monday

Waterfront views without flooding fears? Count us in. A 3-bedroom, 5-bathroom downtown St. Pete condo just hit the market. Eat

Are Gen Z cereal killers? Sales of the boxed breakfast have fallen by 13% in the US compared to 2021 — a decline attributed to changing preferences in young Americans. But who can blame them when they have local brunch options like this? (New York Post)

Pets

Yes, you can bring your dog. Tampa is the No. 2 most pet-friendly city in the country, per a new WalletHub study. The rankings were compiled using metrics like pet budget, pet health and wellness, and outdoor fun. Our dog-friendly businesses have plenty on offer for Fido.

Stat

1.4%. That’s the percentage of income TBAY residents should expect to spend on clothing, based on a study by WalletHub. This outfits the Cigar City at No. 58 on the site’s list of cities where people spend the most to get dressed (when comparing the 100 largest US cities).
