Recapping Tampa Bay’s Olympic athletes’ performance

This weekend marks the end of Paris Olympics 2024 — with the closing ceremony taking over the Stade de France on Sunday, Aug. 11 (which airs at 3 p.m.). And here’s your TBAY connection: our own Bobby Finke FaceTimed Katie Ledecky to tell her she would be the USA’s flag bearer.

Now we’re diving (had to) into how our local athletes fared in the games.

Bobby Finke, Swimming

We’ve got to start off with our own gold medalist. The Clearwater-born swimmer set a new world record in a showstopping 1500-meter freestyle swim. Aquatic legend Michael Phelps called Finke’s performance “unbelievable,” adding “that was one of the greatest swims of the Olympics in my opinion”.

Austin Krajicek, Tennis

Krajicek and his partner Rajeev Ram pulled off a silver medal finish in the mens’ doubles bracket, losing to Australia’s Matthew Ebden and John Peers.

Nelly Korda, Golf

She’s not done yet. The world No .1 golfer finished two-under par through two rounds of the Olympic showdown — hoping to pick up another piece of hardware. The third of four rounds takes place today, Aug. 9.

Erriyon Knighton, Running

The sprinter pulled off an incredible fourth place finish in the men’s 200m final, up against the likes of Letsile Tebogo and Noah Lyles.

Danielle Collins, Tennis

The Burg native rocked her first Olympics, making it all the way to the women’s singles quarterfinals before she had to withdraw from her match due to heat exhaustion. Collins and her partner, Desirae Krawczyk, were ousted in the second round of the women’s doubles competition.

Felicia Stancil, BMX

The Tampa resident + BMX pro came in at No. 22 in her second Olympic appearance.

Parker Valby, Running

The East Lake High School grad is going for the gold in the Women’s 10000-meter final today, Aug. 9. Tune in at 2:57 p.m.

Noah Lyons, Sailing

In his first Olympic Games, the sailor finished ninth overall in the Men’s Windsurfer (iQFOiL) competition on the Bay of Marseille.

Dania Vizzi, Shooting

The Tampa athlete — nicknamed the “shooterina” — came in 12th place in the women’s skeet competition at her first Olympic Games. The US team finished in 6th place in the team competition.

Friday, already? Another week has come and gone, and we’re back to break down more of Tampa’s proposed Fiscal Year 2025 budget.

Today we’re diving into Neighborhood and Community Affairs — basically the department that ensures your slice of Tampa runs smoothly.

A reminder: This is still just the proposed budget, so plans are subject to change.
    • This year, the city is proposing ~$17.2 million for the department.
    • The money will help the city maintain its enforcement of city ordinances, codes, and regulations. Think: Making sure issues like overgrown lots, abandoned cars, and piled up junk are dealt with.
    • The budget will also fund the Mayor’s Neighborhood University program which trains current and budding neighborhood leaders on how the city works.
    • The department plans to continue making community outreach efforts with meetings and special events.
    • The city wants to continue its Operation Neighborhood Cleanup, ridding areas of trash, graffiti, and illegal dumping.
Let us know which part of Tampa’s budget we should tackle next.
