They’re definitely thinking about it. | Diego Delso via Wikimedia Commons
It’s a question people are asking on social media. It turns out we think about it quite a lot. Here are some spots around Tampa Bay that will remind you of the ancient civilization, and help you carpe some diem. After all, there’s no place like Rome.
Roman around outdoors
The world’s longest continuous sidewalk might bring the empire to mind. A stroll down South Rome Avenue from Hyde Park will take you to Bayshore Boulevard. Its white pillars would not have been out of place in Roman times. Sandals optional.
The Don CeSar — it’s a stretch, we know — offers day passes where guests can enjoy Gulf views from the hotel rooftop, pools, beach access, and food + drink. The Pink Palace is fit for an emperor, and any trustworthy friends.
The Romans fought against bears but they never came up against the scariest beasts of all — manatees. You can see them for free in Apollo Beach at the Tampa Electric Manatee Viewing Center. It usually opens from November to April.
In St. Pete, you can dine at Bacchus Wine Bistro. The Roman god of wine might be disappointed to see French cuisine on the menu, but the selection of reds, whites, and rosés would probably change his mind.
The Saunders Planetarium at the Museum of Science & Industry will take you to Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, and Venus. Pluto is there too, even if he’s only a demigod now.
Gladiators live on
We don’t have our own Colosseum, but Tampa Bay has gladiators of its own. You can catch them playing hockey at Amalie Arena, football at Raymond James Stadium, or baseball at Tropicana Field.

There’s no need to search for spare change as you board the TECO Line Streetcar. That’s thanks to the Florida Department of Transportation, which just gave HART a $700,000 grant to keep it free to ride for the next year.
Let’s learn some more about the history of streetcars in Tampa:
Roll up, roll up. People started using the mode of transport back in 1892 to commute to and from West Tampa’s cigar factories.
In 1946, streetcars stopped running after being outgrown in popularity by cars and buses.
The Tampa & Ybor City Street Railway Society campaigned for almost 20 years to get the streetcars running again. They were victorious in 2002 when the carriages hit the road.
The streetcar’s loop was later extended to 2.7 miles and now runs from Ybor City to Downtown Tampa.
More than 1.2 million trips have been made so far in 2023.
