Take a peek at “Photo Ybor: Then and Now”

The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts’ new exhibit juxtaposes iconic Tampa photographs with shots of the same locations today.

Two pictures of the same Ybor City building, one in black and white, and one in color, sit side by side.

One vignette from the series shows what was then the Gutierrez Building and is now Centro Ybor.

Our beloved Tampa is always changing. As the great philosopher Ferris Bueller, of “Day Off” fame, once said: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts’ new exhibit “Photo Ybor: Then and Now” makes sure take in all the little ways Ybor has evolved. The recently opened show tells the story of the historic Tampa neighborhood from its founding in 1886 until today.

In it, the show’s artist Chip Weiner pairs photographs created by the
Burgert Brothers from the late 19th and early 20th centuries with new shots he took at the exact same spots, at the same angle, and at the same time of day.

The collection also features artwork showing the businesses and people of the neighborhood from a range of other artists.

Tickets to the museum range from $10-$12. Catch the show through Nov. 17.
