The city is working to make its inspection process faster and more accessible to more builders and contractors.

Homeowners, builders, and contractors know getting inspectors out can complicate — and extend the timeline — of the already arduous renovation or building process. Tampa just introduced a new tool to hopefully simplify the process.

The city just started using VuSpex — a new digital tool that lets contractors and homeowners get inspections done virtually. The hope is to cut down on wait times and make inspections more accessible, according to a press release.

There’s two ways to do it:

  • Once you download the app, you can use it to make an “offline field report” i.e. take photos and videos for an inspector to review later.
  • Or you can book a live virtual inspection on the app, where your inspector will walk you through the review.

The best part: You don’t have to wait for results, they’ll auto-generate in the current permitting system.

Please note: Not all types of inspections are available virtually. Check out the list of approved inspections.
