News Notes

Civic

Tampans took to the polls yesterday to vote in the special election to fill the Senate seat left vacant Jay Collins — who’s now the lieutenant governor. See the status on Josie Tomkow and Brian Nathan’s race for the State Senate District 14 office. (Tampa Bay Times)

Development

The Kolter Group just bought the Hilton St. Petersburg Bayfront. We don’t know what’s in store for the property yet, but it’s the same developer behind One St. Petersburg, Saltaire, and Art House. (Tampa Bay Business Journal)

Try This

It’s time for the other Grand Prix — with boats. More than 50 boats will rev up this weekend in The Monster Energy St. Petersburg Powerboat Grand Prix. There’s also an 140+ jet ski showdown planned. (St. Pete Catalyst)

Show

Summer concert season is on the way, and we have another shining addition. Young the Giant will play Tampa’s Yuengling Center on Tuesday, June 2. The indie fave will be joined by Cold War Kids. Presale tickets go sale this Friday, March 27. (Creative Loafing Tampa Bay)

Active

Have you heard of Hyrox? The indoor fitness challenge combines blends running + workout stations (think: rowing), and it’s coming to the Cigar City. The German-developed workout competition takes over the Tampa Convention Center from Friday, Oct. 23 to Sunday, Oct. 25. Get a peek at the workout. (Tampa Bay Business Journal)

Sports

The Rays are making some big lineup changes in the lead up to Opening Day. First up, the team announced starting pitcher Ryan Pepiot will start the season on the injured list. Carson Williams will also take the field as the the starting shortstop. (Tampa Bay Times)

Event Spotlight

Cuban sandich

You can also walk over and grab the OG Cuban sandwich at The Columbia.

There’s Gasparilla Festival, Gasparilla Music Festival, the Knight Parade — you get the gist — but what’s more Tampa than the Cuban Sandwich Festival? And it’s this Sunday, March 29, by the way.

This year’s Cuban sandwich smack down pits local chefs against two competitiors from Japan — a la Marty Mauser and Endo.

Pack the lawn chairs and head to Centennial Park in Ybor City to jam out to the Mambo Lebron Orchestra, pick up snacks, and watch the world’s longest Cuban sandwich come together.

Yesterday, we asked “Which kind of boat was developed in the Tampa Bay area?”

But we stumped most of you.
So, let's try that again

Looking for a way to get rid of those lingering cans of Guinness post St. Pat’s? I baked my first-ever cake with the beer over the weekend, and it turned out insanely delicious. Dare I say, it might need to become a yearly tradition.

I used this recipe from my girl, Wishbone Kitchen. It’s easy to follow and turned out perfectly, so I 10/10 recommend.
