News Notes

Development

Preserve the ‘Burg’s appeal to stop Stadler Development’s new 21-story tower, called The Pelican, just failed. St. Pete City Council voted 4-3 in favor of the project, with council members arguing the $134 million project meets the city code + city review standards. What neighborhood is it going up in? (Tampa Bay Business Journal)

Opening

Last week, we shared the plans for Tokyo Swim Club, but there’s more where that came from. The same MICHELIN-starred owners just announced plans for Mei, a new spot blending “French technique, Nordic ethos, and Japanese ingredients.” The restaurant will debut in the old Bento space. We’ll keep you posted on the timeline. (Creative Loafing Tampa Bay)

Try This

How often do you get to chart astronauts’ journeys to the Moon? Twice, I guess. Head to MOSI tonight for a live watch party of Artemis II launch featuring cosmic-themed activities and a Q+A with space experts. It’s also the one-year anniversary of the Saunders Planetarium. Launch time is 6:24 p.m.

Sports

While we wait on the Rays stadium public funding vote, let’s dig into the other big question: Can the team get the stadium built by opening day 2029? One urban planning professor said yes. A smaller stadium could be built in 30 to 36 months. One key obstacle stands in the way. (Tampa Bay Times)

Outdoors

Dried seaweed is out, dried sargassum is in. Okay, not quite. But a Florida International University food science and technology research professor is looking into extracting alginate from the brown seaweed. The complex carb can be used in sports drinks, salad dressings, and gels. So, maybe it’s not just one of the beach’s biggest pests. (WUSF News)

Community

Grocery prices are on the rise, but so are new ways to give back to our neighbors. Healthy St. Pete recently debuted three new Little Sunshine Pantries across the Burg at Childs Park Recreation Center, Deuces Park, and Silver Lake Park. Stop by to drop off staples or pick up what you need. (I Love the Burg)

Mailbag

We recently shared that Creative Clay is home to Creative Thrift, a low-cost arts supply treasure trove. Donna wrote in to suggest we check out Bottom of the Bin in Seminole for second-hand supplies. She added that the store accepts donations for store credit — score.
