News Notes

Number

$108 million. That’s how much the pricetag went up on the Howard Frankland project after the hurricanes. The total cost is now ~$973.4 million and factors in rising costs of materials + extra work on the project. (Tampa Bay Business Journal)

Coming Soon

Skip Taco Tuesday and opt for for a little Italian at Tutto Tavola. The chef behind Trattoria Pasquale’s just opened a new spot in Riverview. Bailey needs to dig into the Lasagna Nonna Tina expeditiously. The grand opening party is this Friday, Jan. 16. (That’s So Tampa)

Closing

Concrete Jungle is officially closing its doors. Hunger Thirst Group opened the Tulum-inspired eatery downtown St. Pete in late 2023. The building’s owner filed a lawsuit to evict the business due to unpaid rent. (Tampa Bay Business Journal)

State

Could Tampa Bay Downs + Gulfstream Park stop hosting horse races? A state representative proposed a bill that would remove the requirement for the state’s remaining thoroughbred tracks — which are both in TBAY — to hold races in order to host other gambling. (Creative Loafing Tampa Bay)

Outdoors

Florida’s waters are changing, and so is the plight of its stone crabbers. Get a peek at the seasonal search for the delicacy + the state of the industry. (Tampa Bay Times)

The cigars make a pretty good Gaspy party favor.

Yes, there are actually still cigars produced in this here the Cigar City. And what’s arguably the most famous surviving factory, J.C. Newman Cigar Co., just rereleased its José Gaspar Cigar.

Sold in limited-edition packs of five, the 6x54 toro is “wrapped in a Ecuador Havana Sungrown wrapper.” Don’t ask Bailey what that means, she only enjoys candy cigars.

Answered

Yesterday, we asked “How many peak sun hours does Tampa get per day in January?”

The sun shines at the beach. One person is visible in the shallows of the ocean, and waves are lapping onto the sand.

That famous sunshine everyone writes home about.

Barring those pesky foggy or rainy January days, the Tampa area usually gets 5.26 hours of peak sun per day in January. A strong 58% of folks guessed correctly.

What exactly does “peak sun” mean? It’s the “time during which sunlight intensity is strong enough to generate maximum solar energy,” according to SolarEnergyWorld.
Turn that sun into lower power bills

The Wrap

The best winter activity in Florida isn’t skiing or ice skating. It’s visiting the manatees at their winter home i.e. pooled around the TECO power plant in Apollo Beach.

Before you make the pilgrimage, read this look at the Florida Aquarium’s coral conservation efforts, which happen to take place just down the street.
