News Notes

Weather

I smell snow. Really. The National Weather Service’s Tampa Bay office says there’s a 20% chance our coastal areas sees some “Gulf effect flurries” — i.e. a mix of rain and snow — on the night of Saturday, Jan. 31. However, forecasters expect said snow to melt on impact. (Tampa Bay Times)

Coming Soon

Health

USF’s College of Nursing just scored a $2 million donation. The college plans to use the cash to set up the Second Degree Nursing Success Scholarship, which will help students hoping to transition into nursing. The move is part of USF’s broader plan to to address the state’s shortage of nurses. (Tampa Bay Business Journal)

Announced

It’s still MOSI, but now it stands for the Museum of Science and Innovation — not industry. The North Tampa institution unveiled its new name and plans for a Center for STEAM Learning earlier this week. The 30,000-sqft expansion will house a cooking lab, 3D printers, and a computer lab. (WUSF News)

Travel

Breeze just announced a new flight from TPA to Nassau, baby. The low-cost, non-stop jaunt to the Bahamas takes off in mid-June. The best part? Tickets are $99 each way.

Coming Soon

The Burg is getting another coworking space. Where at? Urban Office will open in the Warehouse Arts District later this year. Expect conference rooms, a podcast studio, phone booths, an outdoor work space, a kitchen, lounge areas, and plenty of remote workers to befriend. (St. Pete Catalyst)

Seasonal

Before you pick up the booze this weekend, spend some time digging into Tampa’s Gaspy roots. The Henry B. Plant Museum’s new exhibit, “Gaspar’s Gold: Carnival and Community in a New South City,” is packed with all kinds of relics. Like Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla’s royal crowns and coronation invitations. (WUSF News)

The Stadium Series is this Sunday, Feb. 1, and we can all collectively breathe a sigh of relief that the frosty-ish weather is sticking around.

Fittingly for Gasparilla weekend, the stadium floor is bedecked like a pirate’s map. Obviously, a win against the Bruins marks the spot.
