Some people make to-do lists — we make to-dine lists. Many hot new Tampa + St. Pete restaurants have opened over the past several months, from palate challengers to homey comforts.

To satisfy those who are really hungry for fresh dining options, we’ve got details on TBAY restaurants coming soon, too.

Newly open

V-Roll, Gulfport | Vietnamese | Reservations: No
It’s all rolls and bowls at the hippie town’s newest eatery. Customize your own spring rolls, rice and noodle dishes, or order off the menu — then take your haul right over to the beach.

Elliot Aster, St. Pete | Upscale eats | Reservations: Yes
A Michelin-starred chef just opened a new fine dining location at the Pink Lady. Elliott Aster — dedicated to the Florida wildflower + developer that named the Vinoy —offers steaks, an antipasti bar, and an outdoor seating area with those primo waterfront views.

RetroHouse, Tampa | Chinese, coffee | Reservations: No
Start the morning off with coffee and pastries, then move into the range of Chinese dishes like dim sum and bao once you’re ready for lunch. So far, folks are raving about the matcha with yuzu dip, calling it “top of the line.”
Okay, what's coming next?

News Notes

Weather

Sadly, we’re nearing the height of hurricane season. It’s time to make those storm plans for your boat or electric vehicle — if you haven’t already. Experts say the best thing to do is to move these vehicles to higher ground when a storm is approaching. (WUSF News)

Development

We’re standing on the edge of a new frontier. Sorry, we had to. Developers are planning to build a 22-story, 292-unit tower on the parking lot next to St. Pete’s old Frontier Communications building. The city still needs to approve the permits. (Tampa Bay Business Journal)

Announced

A large section of siding on the historic Jackson House just collapsed. The news comes just days after Tampa City Council approved a new agreement moving along the restoration of the old rooming house. We’ll keep you posted. (WTSP)

Coming Soon

Alerting all downtown Tampa dog owners — and dogs (if you’re reading this). The Tampa Museum of Art is closing the dog run at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park for the expansion. Soon, you’ll be able to bring Fido to two new dog parks between Curtis Hixon + Kiley Gardens. (WUSF News)

Real Estate

Nancy Meyers hasn’t filmed a rom com in TBAY — yet. But this home makes us think she should. Check out this 6,833-sqft Beach Park estate boasting a light-filled kitchen, fireplace, and a pool with a waterfall.

Number

$245,000+. That’s how much WUSF, Tampa Bay’s local NPR station, just received in new financial commitments. The donations will replace funding the affiliate recently lost from the federal government. In addition to local reporting, WUSF broadcasts “All Things Considered” + “Morning Edition.” (St. Pete Catalyst)

Show

I guess these alligator bites won’t heal. Doechii just announced her new “Live from the Swamp Tour” and uhh TBAY and the rest of the Sunshine State didn’t make the cut. Luckily, you can still catch shows further up on the East Coast in Atlanta, Charlotte, and DC. Sign up for the presale.

The Wrap

Matchboxes sit on a white ashtray marked with an M.

Editor Bailey’s prized collection.

I’m a collector of many things (Read: Not hoarder) including matchbooks. A couple years ago, I thrifted an old ashtray from what was once the Princess Martha Hotel. I love heaping on matchbooks new and old.

Have you found any local restaurants and bars that give out their own matchbooks? Please share to help me (and everyone else) with the quest.
