What’s new with the Straz?

The Straz’s next act starts now.

Construction on the riverfront performing arts venue’s long-awaited ~$80 million expansion starts today. We don’t have a construction timeline yet, but we can offer an idea of what patrons can expect.

The plans as of fall 2024

  • A new permanent stage facing the Riverwalk
  • Additional office and dining space
  • A new rooftop
  • A grand terrace on the north end + wrapping around the building
  • A massive outdoor “veil” providing a wealth of sun coverage
A rendering of the Straz's outdoor space shows a covered dining area filled with people at tables, sitting next to a lit performance stage along the Riverwalk.

Soon, you’ll be able to enjoy a meal and a show on the riverfront.

The vision

With the expansion, leaders of the Tampa institution aim to educate even more aspiring Cigar City performers + make performances more accessible (Think: Catching a musical number while on your nightly Riverwalk dog walk).

People sit at tables looking out at the Hillsborough River underneath a geometric overhang.

The veil will offer some welcome shade for those steamy summers.

New shows

Best of all, the shows will continue to go on throughout construction. The Center recently announced the lineup for Opera Tampa’s 30th anniversary season, featuring:
  • “The Turn of the Screw” | Friday, Nov. 21, 2025 + Sunday, Nov. 23, 2025
  • “The Shining” | Friday, Jan. 30, 2026 + Sunday, Feb. 1, 2026
Even more deets + shows
