Exercising doesn’t look the same for everyone — what’s fun and muscle-building for one person may be a slog for someone else.

Use this guide as a resource for all-things fitness in TBAY:

For those who enjoy working out alongside others

It’s TBAY’s — and the country’s — latest workout craze, which takes place on the special megaformer machine. Prepare to sweat buckets as your obliques, legs, and entire body reach muscle failure.

Close out your workday with a cycle, hot yoga, or hot bootcamp class at the downtown Tampa studio. Plus, the local company offers give back and team-building classes.

It’s called “Sweat St. Pete” for a reason.

News Notes

Opening

We’ve been waiting for this one. Olivia is opening its new Sunshine City location on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Make your reservation for some decadent Italian feasting. We recommend the squid ink casarecce and the short ribs.

Closing

Golden Dinosaurs is going extinct. The beloved vegan Gulfport eatery will serve its final meatless melts and reubens on Sunday, Jan. 19. Owners say the past year’s sales and back-to-back hurricanes were “the final nail in the coffin.”

Number

2.1 million cubic yards. That’s how much storm debris workers collected across St. Pete — enough to fill 635 Olympic-sized pools. How does that compare to other storms? The final cleanup tally is more than five times the debris from Hurricanes Irma, Ian, and Idalia combined.

Education

How did last year’s hurricanes impact TBAY students? Reporters found that Helene and Milton substantially damaged at least 36 schools and other district facilities — displacing some schools for months. (WUSF + Climate Central)

Community

Speaking of the hurricanes, the Burg honored four residents for their efforts to take care of their neighbors last fall. Last week, state and city leaders singled out Hurricane Heroes who helped their neighbors with everything from removing flooded drywall to gathering donations. (St. Pete Catalyst)

Plan Ahead

It’s almost time for some gourmet chocolate bacon cheesecake on a stick. That’s right, the Florida State Fair returns Thursday, Feb. 6 with tons of foodie options, rides, racing pigs, and cornhole contests. Get tickets. (WTSP)

Real Estate

Tampa Bay rents are going down. Redfin reports the median asking rent in Tampa Bay fell 10.4% in December to $1,737. What’s going on? Researchers say there’s been an increase in apartment supply. (Tampa Bay Business Journal)

The Wrap

Yes, I’m still figuring out my 2025 goals. And on that note, I’m considering taking a sailing class. If any of you seafaring folk have recommendations for Tampa Bay instructors or classes, let me know. And if you see me struggling on the water, no you didn’t.

Answered

Yesterday, we asked “Are you making hurricane preparation upgrades to your home?”

A gray and blue Aquafence surrounds Tampa General Hospital as the water rises on the street from Hurricane Helene.

The Aquafence kept Tampa General dry as Hurricane Helene flooded South Tampa.

Photos via AquaFence

Some of us might not be able to swing the AquaFence pricetag, but there’s lots of smaller ways we can beef up our homes’ hurricane readiness, like flood barriers, hurricane-proof windows, and shutters.

About 40% of you say your prep is already done. Another 36% of you say you’re working on it.

But a strong 20% of you say you’re not making any, and 4% say you haven’t started yet.
