News Notes

Transit

St. Pete just scored $3.6 million from the US Department of Transportation for the “Safe Streets for All” program. The money will go toward installing better lighting, adding new curb extensions, beefing up pedestrian crosswalks, and instating reduced speed zones — all toward making the Burg safer for walkers. (I Love the Burg)

Development

Plans to transform Euclid Methodist Church into an event space are a no-go. St. Pete’s Community Planning and Preservation Commission denied a local couple’s attempt to change the use of the property. Leaders said the proposed venue, The Treehouse, could create noise and congestion issues. (St. Pete Rising)

Real Estate

Alessi Bakery is on the move. The longtime Tampa bakery is opening a new flagship location at the historic Tampa Letter Carriers building. Summit Design + Build already kicked off construction + it’s projected to open in 2025. Alessi plans to expand the menu, and a coffee bar + a liquor bar. (That’s So Tampa)

Try This

Yes, we have even more news for our favorite Parrotheads. Margaritaville at Sea is rolling out new cruise options from Tampa to Aruba, New Orleans, Curaçao, and Montego Bay. The brand is also offering a new 10-day trip. (Tampa Bay Business Journal)

Travel

What’s on the way to TPA? Frontier just announced a slew of new routes across the country, including flights from Tampa to Houston, Indianapolis (Hey INDYtoday), and Milwaukee. (That’s So Tampa)

Announced

Speaking of new flights, PIE is also rolling out new getaways. And Colorado is calling. Allegiant will start offering flights to Colorado Springs starting on Feb. 14. (I Love the Burg)

Pet

Give Lacy a shot. The Humane Society of Tampa Bay is looking for a home for the swirly-coat pup, who’s been in the shelter for 150+ days. She’s looking for a new home after her owners gave her up due to an emergency. Who could resist that face?

We’ve all been there: Someone’s trying to give you directions by describing 10 lefts, 20 rights, and a jumble of cardinal directions. Isn’t it easier to just point out a landmark?

That’s exactly what we’re doing. We have 10 of the most recognizable TBAY landmarks — scattered across Downtown Tampa to all the way to St. Pete Beach. Not only are these local icons easy to remember, but they’ll also get you where you need to go in a jiffy.

    Rivergate Tower

Address: 400 North Ashley Dr., Tampa

Nearby: Tampa Riverwalk, Kiley Gardens, Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park

The “Beer Can Building” is more than just a landmark, it’s a Cigar City legend. Love it or hate it, the 31-story high rise’s unique shape is a clear marker on those Riverwalk runs or when cruising down the river.

    Sunshine Skyway Bridge

Address: 7508-7534 Sunshine Skyway Ln. S., St. Petersburg

Nearby: Maximo Park, Skyway Fishing Pier State Park, Pinellas National Wildlife Refuge, Manatee County Rest Area

This hard-to-miss 12-mile cable-stayed bridge connects St. Pete and Bradenton. Did you know: The original Skyway was built in 1954 but was destroyed in 1980 when a ship crashed into the bridge, causing it to fall into the Bay.

The Coliseum just celebrated its 100th birthday. St. Pete’s, that is. I loved this trip back into its storied past. Spoiler: It once hosted the Boston Celtics.

Yesterday we asked “What should happen with the Rays?”

We’re in the extra innings on this one — and that’s an understatement.

We still don’t know what’s happening next with the Rays’ stadium deal, but we decided to ask our dear readers for their dream scenarios.

About 38% of folks said the team should relocate to another state. But 34% of people still want the Rays to play at Steinbrenner while they wait for a new stadium, and 22.8% hope the team will try to find another location in the area.

A solid 5% of readers still have no clue what should happen. Don’t worry, we’re in the same camp.
