Edible nightcaps await

Pink lighting in a diner, with Joe's written on the wall in red neon lighting. There is a checkered black and white floor and old-timey booths, with 50s decor throughout and hanging light fixtures. THe booths are empty, and there's one customer sat at the bar.

We’ve all been there. You’re leaving a late-night show or wrapping up a night on the town, and the midnight munchies hit. But it seems like the lights are off and the grills are cold at all your favorite restaurants.

Well, that’s not quite true — because there are definitely joints that cater to nighttime eaters with late-night meals. Save this list for the next time you’ve got an after-hours craving.

Bar bites

Dead Bob’s, St. Pete | Open until 3 a.m.
Savor American eats in the heart of the Burg, with plenty of screens showing all the big games. There’s always a daily special, like fish and chips for $8.97 on Fridays. Pssst — the Tampa location is open late too.

Gaspar’s Grotto, Ybor City | Open until 2 a.m.
The eclectic pirate-themed bar serves up Spanish flavors and local staples, including a killer Cuban sandwich. While you’re waiting, check out the range of memorabilia and unique collectibles around the joint.
Multiple pizzas sit on plates with steam coming off the top. They are on a silver countertop with five pies visible, with several different flavor combinations visible.

Get them while they’re hot.

Around the clock

Joe’s New York Diner, North Tampa | Open 24 hours
Grab a bite whenever you like in retro surroundings befitting the 1950s, including a jukebox and classic black and white checkered flooring. Choose from a range of loaded fries, hearty burgers, and plenty of breakfast options.

The Corner Skillet, Largo | Open 24 hours
Good luck ordering here — there’s so much to choose from. Breakfast favorites include skillets, omelets, pancakes, and burritos, but the list goes on and on.

Comfort food

Angelo’s Grill & Bar, St. Pete | Open until 3:30 a.m.
Nothing says comfort food like pizza, subs, cheesesteaks, gyros, wings, burgers, pasta dishes, and sandwiches. Angelo’s has it all, and has been serving late-night eats to St. Pete locals for the past 15 years.

Ahead of Halloween, we asked you for the scariest place in Tampa Bay

A pumpkin is lit up surrounding by pitch black darkness. Its eyes are triangles and its mouth is jagged and smiling.

You’re not turning me into a latte.

... and the answer may surprise you.

Our readers voted the Publix deli line as TBAY’s scariest place, with chicken tender subs not reward enough for 36% of you. Talk about chickens.

Despite Ybor City’s ghostly past, the historic part of town came up short in second place, with 32% of the vote.

The Tampa Theatre received 21% of the vote — a ghost tour shouldn’t be too scary then. And the Don CeSar Hotel brought up the rear with 11%, but investigators may disagree with that one.

I’ll be celebrating my birthday in a couple of days. As a Halloween baby, I feel an obligation to dress up for the occasion.

I might pull the classic Tampa move of reusing my Gasparilla fit, but I’m also tempted to recreate whatever this was from my childhood. Seeing as my mother shared this photo with the entire family, why not put it in a newsletter?
