Ready to samba and sway your way to peak physical health? You’ve got this.

We’ve rounded up some of the Tampa Bay area’s best low-impact exercise classes, sports, and dance nights perfect for older adults.

St. Pete Shuffleboard Club

Shuffleboard is back — actually it never left. The sport is a great low-impact option: All you have to do is slide pucks to earn points. Our very own world’s largest shuffleboard club hosts open play Friday nights under the stars + offers tons of leagues, which are also a great way to make new friends. Provided you’re a good sport, of course.

Sunshine Center

Mingle with tons of folks ages 50+ at the Mirror Lake-adjacent spot — just a few blocks over from the Shuffleboard Club. The class roster is stacked with options like chair volleyball, tango for Parkinson’s, yoga, tai chi, Ageless Grace Fun Fitness, and arthritis exercise classes.

JCC on the Cohn Campus

South Tampa’s JCC is home to a Silver Sneakers program — classes for older adults that are covered by ~60 health plans nationwide. There’s a classic class aimed to boost your muscular strength, a water fitness program, and yoga classes.

Gulfport Casino

The historic, seafoam green hall looks right out on Boca Ciega Bay and hosts ballroom dancing lessons, Argentine tango nights, swing dancing sessions, Latin nights, country dancing, and all kinds of special events (hello disco night). So you can swing dance while taking in a sunset.

YMCA

Whether you want to sweat it out in a Zumba, Pedaling for Parkinson’s class, or just hit the treadmill, the YMCA is a top-notch option. Plus, there’s a wealth of locations across the Tampa Bay area, so you can find a convenient option for you.

Senior Connection Center

In addition to providing all kinds of support resources, the Tampa center hosts tai chi, Arthritis for Fall Prevention + Matter of Balance classes at locations all across Hillsborough County — like the Progress Village Senior Center and Sweet Water Grand The Bridges.

Summer’s almost over, but here in Tampa Bay, the heat is not. We’re digging into the question on everyone’s mind — how many days this year will Tampa be over 90°?

Well, let’s take a look at how hot it’s been so far.

The National Weather Service reports that Tampa had 20 days with temperatures at or above 90° in May, 27 days in June, 29 days in July, and 28 days in August.

How does 2024 (thus far) stack up to years past?

Tampa’s hottest year in recorded history was in 2023, with an average temperature of 76.6°. St. Pete also had a record-breaking 2023, with an average temperature of 76.5°.

La Niña climate patterns — which signal the cooling of ocean surface temperatures in certain areas of the Pacific — are projected to arrive between September and November, which is later than expected + could result in warmer and drier conditions.

How many 90°+ days do you think Tampa will have this year?
