The Paris 2024 Olympics will feature several new + newish sports, including break dancing, skateboarding, sport climbing, surfing, and 3x3 basketball. Let’s explore what you need to know about these new events and their rules.
  • Breaking (aka breakdancing) is making its Olympic debut after a resounding success in the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Rooted in hip-hop culture, breaking originated in the US and dates back to the 1970s. Breaking battles will take place on Friday, Aug. 9 and Saturday, Aug. 10 at La Concorde in the heart of Paris.
  • Stoked about skateboarding at the Summer Olympics? Us too. This sport is newish to the Games — it debuted at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and it seems it’s here to stick. The world’s greatest skateboarders — including many from California repping Team USA (we see you, Bryce Wettstein + Nyjah Huston) — will compete in two disciplines across preliminary and final events: park + street skating. Skateboarding events will take place at La Concorde beginning tomorrow, July 27.
  • Sport Climbing — This new Olympic sport is going to rock your world. Similar to skateboarding, sport climbing made its Olympic debut at the Tokyo Games, it’s also here for the long haul. Sport climbing events will take place at Le Bourget between Monday, Aug. 5 and Saturday, Aug. 10.
  • We’re amped for this one, too. Surfing debuted at the Tokyo Games and is back to catch more waves at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Surfing events will take place at the iconic surfing spot Teahupo’o in Tahiti — 9,000+ miles away from Paris — beginning tomorrow, July 27.
  • 3x3 basketball also debuted at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics — although, there have been several iterations of the event at Youth Olympic Games over the years. These events will be played at La Concorde with games beginning Tuesday, July 30.

Light the torch and cue that iconic Olympics theme song — we’re ready for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics happening Friday, July 26 to Sunday, Aug. 11.

At this summer’s Olympic Games, approximately 10,500 athletes from 206 National Olympic Committees will compete across 32 sports — including some new ones. Since we’re all about keeping it local, we’ve rounded up nine Paris 2024 Olympians with ties to Tampa Bay that you should keep your eye on. Let the Games begin.
  • Danielle Collins, Tennis
The Burg-born tennis phenom just returned from Wimbledon, only to head right back to the international stage to try for an Olympic win in her final year on the WTA Tour.
  • Bobby Finke, Swimming
The two-time Olympic medalist — and Clearwater native — will take to the Parisian water in hopes of claiming his third piece of hardware.
  • Austin Krajicek, Tennis
The Brandon native and IMG Academy alum is headed to France for his second Olympics appearance. This time, he’s hoping to come home with something shiny.
  • Nelly Korda, Golf
It’s no surprise with all of our gleaming local courses that we have the world’s No. 1 ranked women’s golfer in our midst. The Bradenton-born golfer took home the gold in Tokyo and is hoping to pick up another medal for her collection.
