Our review of Juno & the Peacock

The front of Juno & the Peacock. Red and white striped umbrellas sit above tables outside the restaurant, whose name is written in gold letters on a while building. Greenery and trees surround the building, and a mostly cloudy but somewhat blue sky is above.

After a stroll along the waterfront, a glance at the Vinoy’s cotton candy towers, and a hop, skip, and jump through North Straub Park’s tree-laden walkways, we arrived.

The former 400 Beach restaurant was near-unrecognizable after a glossy makeover. Juno & the Peacock’s red- and white-striped umbrellas offered a classical introduction. Smiles awaited inside. Timeless decor greeted us with red booths, rich wooden features, and splashes of gold across a bright modern room.

“This is the best seat in the house,” said our server Gary, whose helpfulness + expertise knew no bounds. We were sat by the front window, with the Vinoy visible past wispy curtains, as was the calming bustle of a Beach Drive Tuesday night, and the calm of the water.

Gary first talked us through the cocktail list — a simple yet creative homage to one drink per decade from the start of the 20th century to today. Possibly the best espresso martini in St. Pete quickly followed, representing the 2020s.

What we ate

Difficult food decisions lay ahead, given the range of new American coastal cuisine, steaks, and other culinary delights.

To start, we shared the Maryland crab cake and Wagyu beef carpaccio. Both were exquisite, but the former was the star of the show — we captured its flakiness in our Instagram reel. A perfectly cooked 16-oz ribeye followed, complete with chimichurri, charred veg, and a side of creamy garlicky mash.

Pro tip: Save room for dessert. We couldn’t decide between the tres leches or key lime pie, so we got both. An excellent decision.

This was when we struck up a conversation with a friendly gentleman named Eric sat at the next table over. It was his third visit in the restaurant’s first five days of operation. “I’ll get the ribeye next time,” he said.

    Breaking down the budget

    Breaking down Tampa’s budget: Parking

We’re back with another look at at the City of Tampa’s proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2025. This week, we’re looking at the city’s parking plans.

Editor’s note: The budget is still a proposal, with final plans yet to be set in stone.
    • The recommended FY2025 operating budget for the Parking Division is just over $49 million.
    • Of that amount, ~$9.8 million is suggested for the Capital Improvement Program (CIP). In other words, this is money set aside for improvements and upgrades.
    • The largest chunk of CIP change — $5 million — will go to the Smart Mobility Division. Those are the folks who control traffic lights, road signs, and streetlights.
    • City-run parking garages are getting $3.3 million for restoration + modernization.
    • Electric vehicle owners rejoice. There’s $1.5 million for EV charging stations and infrastructure upgrades.
Let us know which part of the budget you want to read about next.

    Here’s a hint: That’s incorrect.

It looks like the fifth named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, Ernesto, is expected to become a major hurricane today. Fortunately for the Tampa Bay area, the storm isn’t headed this way, but the weekend is a perfect opportunity to prepare as we continue to track action in the tropics.
