Unwritten rules of the Tampa Bay area

Whether you’re a Tampa Bay area native or a relative newcomer, there are just some things every TBAY resident understands to be true.
We asked our readers to share the Tampa Bay area’s unwritten rules, from common Tampa + St. Pete knowledge to relatable trends and local lingo. You won’t find these rules in a handbook, but they are undoubtedly absorbed by the community — and if you’re not from the Tampa Bay area, these might be a little difficult to explain.
“You must eat pizza from the pizza window in Ybor after clubbing.” — R. Budz (This is a New York New York reference.)
“Make sure you tell everyone where you’re originally from🤌🏼.” — Christina T-A.
“Lightning gonna strike ⚡.” — Cindy B. (Not sure if you’re talking about the weather or our hockey team, Cindy. Either way, you’re right.)
TBAY locals love a trip to Amalie.

“If you have a giant pick up truck that never actually hauls anything, you don’t have to use a blinker? 😇.” — Anonymous Instagram user
“Forget how to use a turning signal.” — Nicole C.

Nom Nom’s meals are pre-portioned for your dog’s unique caloric needs, so there’s no guessing, no scooping. | Photo by Nom Nom
Dog parents know that a stimulating day begins and ends with enriching meals.
That’s why Nom Nom’s enticing variety of vet-developed recipes burst with the nutrients dogs need and the tastes and textures they crave. Imagine — beef that looks like beef and carrots that look like carrots. No high-temperature vats, artificial flavors, or impossible-to-pronounce preservatives.
That’s because Nom Nom is made with love (aww), not meat meal (eek).

Breaking down Tampa’s budget: Stormwater edition

Welcome back to our series where we take a closer look at the City of Tampa’s proposed Fiscal Year 2025 budget. This week we’re diving into a slippery topic: Stormwater upgrades.
Before we begin, current projections are only propositions, and will need final approval from Tampa City Council.
The city wants to spend $7.3 million on its Stormwater capital improvement program (CIP).
The largest chunk of money — $3.8 million — is proposed for the South Howard Flood Relief and Streetscape Project. Described as a “transformational enhancement to the South Howard commercial corridor,” the project aims to reduce flooding over the next few years via a new high-capacity stormwater box culvert system.
The Citywide Watershed Master Plan will use $1.5 million to update + create new studies and models for Tampa’s drainage systems. Following the plan’s completion, residents could see flood insurance discounts.
Let us know which part of Tampa’s budget would you like to read about next.
We asked about your Olympics hosting dreams for Tampa Bay
We’re headed back to the City of Love.

Earlier this week, we gave our thoughts on where Olympics events could take place if the Tampa Bay area were ever lucky enough to host the Games. And you did too.
For the Opening Ceremony, 41% of voters would keep it patriotic. Not far behind, a pirate-themed Gasparilla 2.0 received 36% of the votes.
A strong 49% would like to see gymnastics at Amalie Arena, followed by the Rays’ new stadium in second place.
When it comes to rowing, a whopping 71% of people would like to see scullers hit the Hillsborough River.
And 65% would like to watch soccer at Raymond James Stadium.
If the Olympics wasn’t sweet enough already, Krispy Kreme is offering $1 doughnuts for reward members throughout the Games. The Tampa Bay area has four locations — two in Tampa, one in St. Pete, and one in Brandon.
Because nothing says Olympic-level competition like deep fried dough covered in sugar. I’ll take half a dozen.
