Meet the Airbnb of boating

Meet Getmyboat: the Airbnb of boating

An ideal weekend? Grabbing some friends and renting this Tampa Powerboat. | Photo via Getmyboat
You know how the saying goes: “A friend with a boat is better than owning a boat.”

Skip the friend part and get straight to enjoying a day on the water with Getmyboat, an Airbnb-like service that lets you rent boats from locals and organizations in the area.

How it works

The boat rental company serves various US cities, including in the Tampa Bay area, and shares available boat rentals. To get started, create an account and start searching for the watercraft that best suits your needs for the day (think: anything from pontoons to yachts).

You can cater your search to exactly what you’re looking for — trips under $300, captained boats, sailboats, or jet skis — or you can just browse what’s available.

A two-story pontoon boat on the water. One person is standing near the back of the boat looking at another person in the water. A third person is sitting on the top floor of the boat, while a handful of other people are standing or sitting at the front of the boat.

Pontoon with a slide? Getmyboat’s got it.

Double Decker Party Boat | Madeira Beach | $90-$125/hour

This 25-ft pontoon is equipped to hold 14 people with two floors, a slide, a high-end sound system, and a captain available for hire at $50/hour.

2021 Pursuit with Captain | St. Petersburg | $150/hour

This newer listing comes with Captain Jim, who has been chartering boats for over three years — plus, a bathroom.

Luxurious Motor Yacht with Captain | Palm Harbor | $250-$300/hour

Lounge on the huge bow deck with cushions, sit down for a bite at the air-conditioned dining room table, avoid UV rays under the shaded cockpit, or jump into the water from the dive platform.

Sunset Sail with Captain | Tampa | $160/hour

This charter has a six-person maximum for its sailing adventure. Bonus: Get your own sailing lessons while on the boat.

None of these float your boat? Check out the other rental options available in the Tampa Bay area.

Not a fan of the booms + pops of Independence Day fireworks? Check out these ideas for folks and furry friends averse to fireworks displays.

Find a firework-free event

Hillsborough County Fairgrounds will host a free Fourth of July event today that culminates in a sensory-friendly 9 p.m. drone show. Dogs on a leash are welcome.

Get away from the TBAY bursts in Crystal River, where American Legion Post 155 will host an “Escape the Fireworks” event designed for veterans with PTSD. All are welcome to attend.

Celebrate early, hunker down late

Head to a local event earlier in the day, then hunker down at home with the TV on high volume. St. Pete’s Mutts & Martinis will be open from 12 to 6 p.m., so you can wear out the pups before fireworks begin.

Get away

While Floridians are legally permitted to launch fireworks on three days out of the year — including Independence Day — Treasure Island is enforcing ordinances to limit use on its beaches.

From the editor
Happy Independence Day, everyone. Admittedly, my plans are pretty tame — if all goes well, I’ll be in bed for the majority of the day, only getting up to grab my veggie dog from the delivery drop-off at my apartment. The American dream, right?
