Clink, clink. We’d like to make a toast.

This summer — Monday, July 22-Friday, July 26 — we’ll be raising a glass to Drink Up Week, a celebration of entrepreneurs, mixologists, venues, and beverages across our buzzy city.

From coffee, tea, and smoothies to wine, craft beer, and specialty cocktails and mocktails — we’ll be covering it all in hopes of showcasing the Cigar City + the Burg’s vibrant drink culture.

Now, this is where you come in.

If you own a local beverage business or know someone who does, celebrate Drink Up Week with us by offering a fun drink deal or two to our readers — say 50% off margaritas, BOGO smoothies, or 20% off a beer flight (mix it up, we’re open to ideas). Drop your deal into this form by Friday, June 28 and our local City Editors will include it in an interactive map of all the deals happening during Drink Up Week. There’s no charge to submit deals.

We’ll also highlight a few of the can’t-miss drink deals here in our newsletter. Want to make sure your drink special makes it in? You can guarantee inclusion by purchasing a paid content package.

Meanwhile, if you’re a reader who wants to experience Tampa + St. Pete through Drink Up Week, sip tight. Before Drink Up rolls around, we’ll be working hard to pull together a list of local drink deals and fun stories about our city’s drink scene.

We want to know — is there a local business you’d love to see participate in Drink Up Week? Forward this newsletter to them and tell them we’d love it if they joined us.

News Notes
Weather
  • Forecasters are warning this could be an “extraordinary” hurricane season due to a warmer-than-usual Atlantic + La Niña. We’re looking at up to 25 named storms this season, with up to seven major hurricanes. The season starts Saturday, June 1 — get prepped with our guide. (Tampa Bay Times)
Today Is
  • Memorial Day, honoring US military personnel who died in the line of duty. It is a federal holiday, meaning civic offices, most state offices, banks, and public libraries will be closed. Commemorate the day at American Legion Post’s Memorial Day Observance at 11 a.m. today.
Open
  • Calling all downtown Tampa city slickers. The Bean Bar, the Cuban coffee truck, is now serving up brews at 916 E. Twiggs St. Stop by on your walk to work or coffee break for an espresso, smoothie, or pastry. Plus, the popular latte flight spot is hinting at a Carrollwood location. (That’s So Tampa)
Development
  • How does inflation factor into the new Rays’ stadium price tag? Right now, the deal doesn’t include inflationary adjustments or escalations for the sale of St. Petersburg land + holds the team responsible for construction overruns. (Tampa Bay Times)
Number
  • ~2.5 million. That’s how many Floridians were projected to take to the roads or the (airport) runway last Memorial Day weekend, according to AAA. And we’re breaking records once again, with a predicted 126,500 more travelers than the previous record set last year. (Tampa Bay Times)
Transit
  • One day you might be able to take the Streetcar to the Heights. Tampa city leaders plan to put out a request for bids for an extension of the TECO Line Streetcar. The city would still need to find funding for the project. (Tampa Bay Business Journal)

Wellness
  • Don’t let summer heat drain you. One scoop of Native Hydrate electrolyte drink mix = increased energy levels, improved muscle strength, and improved bladder function all season long.*

Last week we asked “which spot is your fave?”

These results are hopping. A tall pour of our readers are 3 Daughters Brewing aficionados with 54.5% reporting they’ve toasted at the Central Avenue spot.

Cigar City + Green Bench tied for second place, with ~18% of readers saying they’ve visited the TBAY staples.

And finally ~9% of you said you’ve tried BarrieHaus, which means a visit to the European-style microbrewery must be in order.

From the editor
I was enthralled by this conversation between between USF historians Evan P. Bennett + Gary Mormino about Bennett’s new book, “Tampa Bay: The Story of an Estuary and Its People.” Spoiler: They dug into the history of species like oysters in Tampa Bay. Nerd out with me.
