Throwing recyclables into the wrong container? What a waste.
People around the world are trying to live in increasingly sustainable ways. From reducing carbon emissions to changing eating habits, there’s a range of ways to do your part for our planet. If you’re looking for an easy green habit for 2024, recycling could be a good place to start.
What to do
The first question is an obvious one: what can I recycle? Glass containers, paper, flattened cardboard, tin products, and aluminum cans/containers can all be recycled. Remember to rinse off food + drink residue to avoid contaminating other recyclables.
Plastics can also go in the recycling container, as long as they are numbered one through seven: Look for this symbol — ♻️ — with one of those numbers inside.
What to avoid
One thing to avoid is a practice known as “wishcycling,” defined as “the act of tossing something in your recycling bin with the mere hopes that it is recyclable.” In other words: if in doubt, just throw it out.
Do not recycle commonly misplaced items like plastic shopping bags + trash bags, as well as plastic kitchenware, pizza boxes, tissues, bubblewrap, and paper towels.

The City of Tampa is saying hello to its latest public art piece.
A huge mural titled, “If I Could Fly” now lines three walls at the Wayne C. Papy Athletic Center in Seminole Heights. The center at 6925 N. Florida Ave. has offered dance + gymnastics opportunities to local youth for 40+ years.
Florida-based artist Naomi Haverland created the dream-like piece with inspiration from two young gymnasts. At the unveiling, Haverland expressed her wish for the mural to invoke a sense of imagination.
Mayor Jane Castor called the mural “a reflection of more than four decades of dedicated service to our youth and the impact it will continue to have for generations to come.”
Haverland’s piece is now one of almost 800 public artworks across the Big Guava. The city is flush with murals, and if you want to check them out, we recommend this virtual tour.
