About the team

The Tampa Tarpons are the single-A affiliate of the New York Yankees — in fact, the team was previously named the Tampa Yankees. They play at George M. Steinbrenner Field, which has the exact same dimensions as Yankee Stadium and serves as the Yankees’ spring training field.

On Tuesday, July 4 we hit the road to take on Dunedin at 6:30 p.m. Catch the game on the MiLB First Pitch app. Or watch at Ferg’s Sports Bar (320 Central Ave., St. Petersburg) while the Rays take on the Phillies.

TBAY? More like TBAYSTAYCAY... Anyways, we have an update.

In April, we told you about the changes coming to the TradeWinds Island Resort at St. Pete Beach (5500 Gulf Blvd.).

Since then, 1754 Properties, the team tasked with revitalizing the mainstay hotel, took community feedback through several meetings with surrounding condos, HOAs, city staff, and residents.

New additions to the project

A new permit application filed Wednesday, June 21, makes a few key changes to the original plans:
  • Fewer entrances/exits from TradeWinds to Gulf Boulevard to reduce traffic congestion
  • A new 30-foot-wide landscaped, paved beach access path for local beachgoers + hotel guests
  • Screens and greenery on parking garage exteriors

Here’s a refresher on the plans:

  • Three towers adding 650 guest rooms + demolition of 21 old rooms
  • Three new swimming pools and slides
  • More than 18,000 sqft of retail and dining space
  • Widening of the public sidewalks on Gulf Boulevard.
  • Getting rid of guard gates to alleviate traffic
Plus, the project will create approximately 300 new permanent jobs in the city + 500 construction and other jobs, according to the hotel’s website.

Construction begins this year, and it should be finished by 2034.
