The invasion is coming. Stay ready.

Gaspy weekend is quickly approaching. This year’s pirate invasion is booked for Sat., Jan 28, from 2-6 p.m. Here’s a lowdown on this year’s festive offerings beyond the Bayshore parade — from historical musings to boozy bar crawls.

Pirates may not mark their calendars, but you should. These events may sell out, so we recommend registering or purchasing tickets early.

Friday, Jan. 20
  • Gasparilla: A Tampa Tradition | Friday, Jan. 20-Sunday, March 5 | Times vary | Henry B. Plant Museum, 401 W. Kennedy Blvd., Tampa | $0-$12 | This exhibit explores the uncharted waters of more than 110 years of parades, pirate invasions, and coronation balls in Tampa.

  • Plans for downtown condo tower ONE Tampa have been downsized from 55 stories to 42. Leaders say the move comes after Hillsborough County Aviation Authority officials said they would challenge the building’s height waiver.   • Downtown St. Pete’s 11 Chicks is expanding. The cozy Venezuelan restaurant (199 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. N.) reopens tonight after taking over the building next door. (St. Pete Rising)
Plan Ahead
  • Once a year Tampanians can race on TPA’s runways. This year’s TPA 5K on the Runway is booked for Sat., April 1 at 8 a.m. Tickets are $35 — but the race is limited to 2,000 people. Register online. 🛬 (That’s So Tampa)

  • This new Ybor City bakery is an 11 out of 10. Elevenses, which typically serves decadent treats out of Chocolate Pi, is opening its own storefront at 1001 East Columbus Drive.
