Hillsborough County’s animal shelter is overflowing

A bigger facility could be on its way to help resolve the issue.

This November, voters could approve a new shelter.

Between Tampa and Brandon, there are hundreds of rescue animals waiting for new homes. In fact, there are 300 dogs and 150 cats at the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center.

Right now, the shelter is at 150% capacity. The 60,000-sqft facility at 440 N. Falkenburg Rd. was first built in 1990, with officials dreaming of more space. Our area’s population size — of both humans and pets — has grown, but the center has not increased its capacity.

Their dreams could become reality in November, when the county’s $2.6 billion Community Investment Tax will be on the ballot. The plan? To build 100,000 sqft of shelter space across multiple buildings, meaning dogs and cats could be separated.

In the meantime, if your family could use some unconditional love, the Resource Center’s Online Kennel lists the furry friends up for adoption.
