Add some Tampa Bay flair to the viral cucumber salad recipe trend

Brat Summer is over. Cucumber fall is here.

If you keep seeing cucumber recipes on social media, you may be confused. You can thank a Canadian TikTok and Instagram influencer named Logan Moffitt, also known as the “cucumber guy.”

Logan is credited with the craze thanks to the popularity of his videos in which he thinly slices cucumbers into a cylindrical container using a mandolin, and then adds a bunch of different ingredients like soy sauce, red onion, mayonnaise, cheese, and all manner of tasty goodness. Still confused? Here’s an example.

The viral trend has taken over certain corners of the internet, with many across the world now creating copycat videos or replicating the recipes at home. Guilty. The trend is so popular that it’s even been linked to food shortages in Iceland.

As he starts every video, “sometimes, you have to eat an entire cucumber.” But how can we do that in Tampa Bay style?

  • When buying cucumbers, keeping it local is a great place to start. Our area has stellar farmers markets selling fresh + locally grown ingredients.
  • Some of Logan’s recipes feature foods readily grown in the Tampa Bay area. For instance, he occasionally includes avocados in his videos. Farmers markets are great for those too, or get started on growing your own avocado trees.
  • You could also opt for one of Logan’s seafood-infused takes by heading to a Tampa Bay area seafood store. He has previously used tuna + smoked salmon.
  • If you’re after more local flavors to go along with your thinly sliced green spears, the internet is full of cucumber + mango salad recipes, although Logan hasn’t gone there yet.

To the chefs out there, let us know if you’ve got any other Tampa Bay-inspired recipes befitting the trend.
