Celebrate the Fourth without fireworks

For some, Independence Day fireworks are more of a nightmare than a treat. Check out these ways to participate in the celebration if you (or your pets) don’t like fireworks.

A blonde dog is swimming in a small pool. A sign in the background reads "Mutts & Martinis."

Mutts & Martinis will remain open until 6 p.m. so that pups can let out their energy before the booms begin.

Find a firework-free event

Hillsborough County Fairgrounds will host a free Fourth of July event today that culminates in a sensory-friendly 9 p.m. drone show. Dogs on a leash are welcome.

Further out in Crystal River, American Legion Post 155 will host an “Escape the Fireworks” event designed for veterans with PTSD. All are welcome to attend.

Celebrate early, hunker down late

Head to a local event earlier in the day, then hunker down at home with the TV on high volume. St. Pete’s Mutts & Martinis will be open from 12 to 6 p.m., so you can wear out the pups before fireworks begin.

Get away

While Floridians are legally permitted to launch fireworks on three days out of the year — including Independence Day — Treasure Island is enforcing ordinances to limit use on its beaches.
