Each year, the Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival brings together national and local creatives, speakers, and performers for a variety of community events — all with the hope of sharing African and African-American culture and history. This year’s festival has already begun and runs through the end of January.
Leadership luncheon with Dr. Micah Johnson
Wednesday, Jan. 11 | 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m.
Sociologist Dr. Micah Johnson presents on mental health, specifically addressing the stigma of mental health, self care and mental wellbeing. Individual tickets are $25, and groups of eight can buy tables for $240. The luncheon is located at the University Area Community Development Center (14013 N. 22nd St., Tampa)
Tampa Bay Black Heritage MusicFest
Saturday, Jan. 14 + Sunday, Jan. 15 | Gates open at noon
The 23rd year of the music festival features performances from Nathan Mitchell, DJ Grandmaster Dee, and headliners contemporary jazz trio Jazz Funk Soul, and R&B masters Dru Hill. Gates at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park open at noon. Tickets start at $15 online.
College and Career Conversations
Saturday, Jan. 28 |10 a.m.-1 p.m.
Panelists will present strategies for making the most of the future. Plus, middle schools and high school students from across Tampa Bay can bring their resumes for review + learn how to pitch themselves. The event will be held at Tampa Hillsborough Action Plan Inc. (5508 N. 50th St., Tampa)

Gasparilla Music Festival will not be held at Kiley Garden this year. The city will not issue a permit to use the venue due to waterproofing issues under the plaza, said David Cox, executive director of the Gasparilla Music Foundation. Organizers are working on alternative plans to host the event in downtown Tampa.

The Little Manatee River may soon receive federal protections. Congress just passed a massive spending bill that includes the Little Manatee Wild and Scenic River Act, which would make 51 miles of the river part of the National Park Services Wild and Scenic River System. What’s your favorite part of the state fair, and why is it the food?
This year’s Florida State Fair runs from Thursday, Feb. 9- Monday, Feb. 20. Here’s a peek at some of the wicked eats as you prepare to feast.
Tampa Cuban Funnel Cake: smoked ham, Spanish pork, Genoa salami, and the fixins’ nestled between two funnel cakes and encased with doughnut glaze
Sweet Potato Apple Pie: a mashup of sweet potato pie + butter, sugar, whipped cream, and apples.
Mangonada: blended fresh mangoes with chamoy, tajin, a tamarind stick, and tajin.
Cowbody Quesadilla: a “Texas-sized” quesadilla loaded with shredded barbeque chicken, cheese, corn, and black beans.
From 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. today, the fair is offering a sale on tickets. The $30 deal includes one Anyday armband + admission — 30% cheaper than at the gate. Buy tickets online or at participating Wawa locations.
