Tampa Bay civic updates: Post-hurricane relief

Here’s what you need to know about debris removal and rebuilding

We’re finally out of hurricane season. Let’s all collectively breathe a sigh of relief. But the Milton + Helene recovery process is far from over.

Let’s check in on some post-storms updates, and other need-to-know TBAY news:

FEMA approves additional aid

The federal agency just approved an additional ~$80.7 million for Hillsborough County’s debris removal efforts. For context, the City of Tampa reports workers have picked up 1,194,420 cubic yards of debris thus far — and that doesn’t include the rest of the county.

FEMA also granted Madeira Beach — which suffered enormous damage — an additional ~$6.5 million.

New residential hazard mitigation grant program

Many residents were left without a home after Hurricane Helene unleashed some 8+ ft of storm surge + Hurricane Milton brought 18+ inches of rain upon Tampa Bay. The state is expected to roll out a new residential hazard mitigation grant program — which will give residents money to help rebuild their homes.

What will it entail? The program will give residents money to demolish and rebuild their homes. Plus, the state will help all along the way — from assisting with applications and collecting documentation to helping sort out issues with contractors.

Right now, leaders do not have a timeline for the program’s launch.

Hillsborough will keep their sheriff

Last week, President-elect Trump selected Sheriff Chad Chronister as his pick to lead the Drug Enforcement Administration.

But late Tuesday night, Chronister withdrew from the nomination process. He posted on X, saying in part “there is more work to be done for the citizens of Hillsborough County and a lot of initiatives I am committed to fulfilling.”
