Hut, hut, hike. A new generation of Port Tampa high schoolers will soon have a brand-new natural turf field to run drills + play football on at Southwest Port Tampa Park.

The City of Tampa + Children’s Athletic Network and Dance Opportunities just received a $100,000 grant for the project from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The funds come from the National Football League Foundation Grassroots Program, according to a release.

The plans entail renovating the current fields into high school football field + youth field, Sherisha Hills, Tampa Parks & Recreation director, said in a release. Once the construction is complete, Port Tampa residents will be able to use the space for other sports, clinics, camps, and community events.

“At the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, we believe everyone deserves a level playing field,” said Darcie Glazer Kassewitz, owner of the Bucs. “We are excited to help provide the Port Tampa area with a field of its own that members of the community can be proud of, with hope that it helps inspire children to reach their potential on the athletic field and in life.”

We’ll continue to keep you updated on a start date for construction.
